Let’s back up a little bit, I know this isn’t a food or recipe blog but this is analogy just too fun to not share…
The other day, my wife and I decided to cook a new dish that included curry, fish sauce and turmeric.
(Ya, I didn’t realize what fish sauce was but now I do. I mean no offense to anyone who likes these ingredients – I just have no idea how to cook with them as you will clearly see!)
We bought enough meat to eat dinner two nights in a row so we needed to multiply the recipe by 5. 5 times the curry, 5 times the fish sauce, 5 times the turmeric, you catch my drift.
Long story short I botched the recipe and it was the grossest meal we’ve ever eaten.
To make matters worse, when it was time to clean up we realized our entire kitchen is white – including our sink.
Dude, this was going to stain!
Not only did it smell absolutely horrible because I totally ruined the recipe, but how in the world will we clean up this greenish-yellow-orange staining fish-stank mess?
Cut to the two of us outside on the side of the house after dark in the cold with a flashlight, a hose and a sponge cleaning our pans… airing out our house with fans and open windows…
This is when we realized how ridiculous it all was we both cracked up and laughed uncontrollably… Hose, sponge, and flashlight in hand.
I still laugh thinking about it…
The moral of the story: Don’t be afraid to try something new and if it doesn’t work it’s ok to hose it off outside and laugh about it.
So, many years ago, I tried something new.
This tool has not only helped me heal but it’s helped me thrive in any given situation. Affirmations will literally change your life.
I know what you’re thinking and no, this doesn’t involve fish sauce, curry, and turmeric, this is a magic recipe and much harder to mess up!
Keep it simple.
This affirmation recipe has helped me reshape my thoughts which in turn has reshaped my outcomes.

So, back to thoughts and outcomes…
Many moons ago as I began my healing journey, I didn’t realize how frequently I was sending myself negative messages… it was all the time. My negative self-talk was off the charts.
Everyone does it so I’m sure you understand.
You know how it is, rethinking a situation like “why did I do that or say that” or “I should have said this or done that” and of course the all too common and sometimes hard to decipher and deep-seated “I’m not good enough” all of which stems from scarcity and fear.
We have to recognize what we are doing and saying to ourselves.
Awareness is the first step. Awareness is always the first step in human transformation and change.
Our negative internal messages are on a loop unless we actively redirect and create a new path. Check out this article on Psychology Today about affirmations for more suggestions.
I would never talk to someone I love and care about with such negativity, say or even think those things, so it astounded me as I started, how frequently I was doing this to myself.
I didn’t even realize I was doing it until I paid attention!
Try this for ONE DAY: Open your awareness and see how many times you say or think something negative about yourself.
Change your internal dialog with affirmations and positive self-talk and change your life. It all starts on the inside then it shows up on the outside.
So, here’s a quick rundown on affirmations…
Affirmations are statements that reinforce the kind of person you truly are, who you want to be, they can help overcome challenges that you’re currently faced with and keep you on the path of joy, inspiration, and abundance. A little mindfulness is all it takes.
The Offical Magic Affirmation Recipe and Secret Ingredient
- Write out a list of affirmations – to start out my own handwriting worked the best. Check out the list below for some starter ideas.
- Keep these affirmations with you to read them throughout the day.
- Read them every morning – I have them up in my bathroom cabinet now to look at as I brush my teeth.
- Read them every night as part of your sleep hygiene. (link to sleep hygiene article)
- Read them when you break for lunch or as needed throughout the day.
- You can save them on your phone for quick reference – take a pic of what you wrote or write them in your phone. I’m sure you can find time to read them instead of getting on social media while you’re in the bathroom! Hey, there’s no shame in getting it in where you can!
- Secret Ingredient: Actively Redirect Your Thoughts. Get a simple rubber band, the office supply variety works best, and every time you think something that contradicts your affirmations or you think something negative about yourself, pop yourself with the rubber band. Ouch! Redirect those thoughts! It works!
Remember, the secret ingredient to this magic recipe is the actively redirect your thoughts and affirmations will change your life.
You can literally use this not just for affirmations but with any outdated belief system you have that may need to upgrade. Affirmations will literally change your life.
